A Photographer’s Guide to Moody, Elegant, and Iconic Catholic Wedding Photos
Whether you’re getting married at the UNL Newman Center, St. Peter’s, or another Lincoln-area parish, one of the best portrait locations for your wedding day is just a short drive away:📍 The Nebraska State Capitol.
This is one of our favorite locations in Lincoln for its rich architecture, stunning light, and peaceful, almost reverent atmosphere. If you want photos that feel timeless, artistic, and a little moody in the best way, this is the place.
✨ Why We Love the Nebraska State Capitol for Wedding Portraits

The Capitol feels like it was designed for sacred imagery:
Soft filtered light that flatters and glows, even on cloudy days
Towering mosaics and architecture that make every image feel classic and full of grandeur
A quiet, open atmosphere that lets you breathe and be present during portraits
Whether you're dressed in cathedral-length lace or a sleek modern gown, the tones and textures of this space work beautifully for every bridal style.
🏛️ Best Photo Locations at the Nebraska State Capitol
We’ve photographed here many times and know the best spots, depending on your timeline and the light. Here are our top recommendations:
1. The Outdoor Balcony Overlooking Lincoln

Tucked just beyond the building’s upper level, this quiet balcony is perfect for:
Couple portraits with open skies behind you
Bridal photos with the wind catching your veil
A moment to breathe and pray away from the noise
It’s often empty, and the wind + the architecture create a seriously cinematic moment.
2. The Capitol Gardens

Surrounding the Capitol are a series of small curved gardens with beautiful landscaping and seasonal blooms. They’re great for:
Bridal party photos
Joyful candids
A balance of soft color and strong lines
We love using the gardens as a “soft” contrast to the bold stone of the Capitol walls.
3. The Grand Interior Rotunda + Mosaic Hallways

Inside the Capitol is where the magic really happens.
This space is:
Massive, quiet, and full of soaring ceilings and mosaic floors
Designed with warm golds, deep blues, and natural shadows that create a moody, elegant vibe
Ideal for “editorial-feeling” portraits, long trains, and veil shots that look like they belong in a museum
Even if you only have 15–20 minutes, it’s worth stopping in for the main rotunda shots alone. The light is often indirect and perfect.
📸 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Capitol Portraits
Plan for it. This location deserves at least 30 minutes in your timeline, plus drive time. We’ll help you fit it in smoothly.
Bring the right shoes. The interior floors are marble, and it’s a lot of walking—so bring a pair of slip-on shoes for in-between!
Trust your photographer. We’ll guide you through posing that feels elegant, editorial, and natural—not stiff.
Use it for quiet. This space often helps couples reset emotionally during a busy day. It’s calm, quiet, and sacred in its own way.

🧡 Photos That Match the Sacrament
At Sammy Kopecky Photography, we believe your photos should match what your wedding day is really about:something sacred, intentional, beautiful, and true.
The Nebraska State Capitol is one of the few locations that reflects that in architecture, light, and mood—and we would love to bring you there.
